Backstory
Inspired by Killers of the Flower Moon, this project highlights the disproportionate levels of abuse faced by Native American women compared to white women in the U.S., despite Native women comprising only 2% of the female population. I aim to bring attention to the historical and ongoing injustices impacting Native women in Western society.
Challenges
Finding reliable data on abuse affecting Native American women was challenging due to underreporting and incomplete statistics on minority groups.
Ensuring that I approached this project with sensitivity so that the visualization respects the experiences of Native women without sensationalizing their trauma or reinforcing harmful stereotypes.
The Task
Create a data visualization on a social justice topic that interests you and focus on a specific aspect of the issue in a chosen region. Source at least one unbiased, publicly available dataset to build a compelling visual that advocates a clear position while maintaining an ethical and balanced perspective.
